Simpson County Academy was well represented Tuesday, May 2nd, at a reception in Jackson at the Mississippi Library Commission honoring winners from the Letters for Literature contest. Mrs. Tawesia Meador’s fifth and sixth grade language students placed out of 488 entries. The list of winners is as follows: Ann Marie Scallion, second place and $75.00, Tristan Freeman, Finalist; Bryce Williams, Semifinalist; Chanse Funchess and Chloe Peterson Semifinalist. Being selected from this number of students was indeed an honor.
Students were asked to write a letter to an author of a book that they had read and that had inspired them in some way. Author of “Yard Wars,” Taylor Kitchings, was present to speak to the group. One of the six SCA students had read his book and written his letter to Mr. Kitchings. Tristan Freeman kicked the reception off by reading his written letter to Mr. Kitchings. Mr. Kitchings was almost moved to tears as Tristan read his book and told how he was inspired and the lessons learned from Kitchings’ book.
Principal, Marney Walker, and Teacher, Tawesia Meador, accompanied these students to the ceremony in addition to many parents and family members.
