Shelby Carrico, a Junior at Simpson County Academy, recently attended the Mississippi High School Leaders workshop, hosted by the Trent Lott Institute located on the Campus of the University of Mississippi. Shelby was invited after being elected Junior class President. Cullen Shows, a Senior at SCA was also invited due to his being elected Student Body President, but was unable to attend due to his selection as a MAIS All-Star.
The event began with a welcome dinner and speaker. Saturday brought workshops and breakout sessions led by faculty and professionals, examining teamwork, communication, time management and conflict resolution. The workshops dealt with topics such as Community Engagement and Service, Ethics, Local Leadership and Being Prepared for College Academically, Financially and Emotionally. Sunday’s session concluded after breakfast and one final wrap-up session.
In addition to tangible informational take-a-ways, the participants were provided a unique opportunity to develop rapport with other young leaders in the state. The information exchange among peer groups provided an immediate reinforcement for the work done in the breakout sessions.
The workshop was limited to 50 participants but plans are in place to increase that number to 75 in 2016. Participants were either their schools Student Council President or Junior Class President from both public or private high schools across the state.
