Most Salt in the Diet Comes from Manufactured Foods, Not the Salt Shaker
Most of the salt that Americans consume comes from processed foods and restaurant meals, and isn’t added at home. A new study of adults in three metropolitan areas across the U.S. finds that only 10 percent of salt in the diet came from food prepared at home. Instead, restaurant meals and store-bought foods, including crackers, breads and soups, accounted for 71 percent of salt intake.
Salt is the main source of dietary sodium, which is linked to higher blood pressure and a greater risk of heart attack. To reduce salt and sodium intake, check the nutritional label of foods that you purchase, and limit restaurant food in favor of healthier food prepared at home.
