In March 2017, Sadie Moody, the daughter of Kade and Jackie Moody, competed in an at-large competition of Distinguished Young Women (“DYW”) in Meridian, MS and qualified to represent Simpson County in DYW’s state competition in July.
DYW, formerly America’s Junior Miss, was founded in 1958 and is a national scholarship program that inspires high school girls to develop their full, individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments. DYW strives to give every young woman the opportunity to further her education and prepare for a successful future and supports an overarching theme of scholarship, leadership and talent.
The DYW Program judges participants in the areas of Scholastics, Interview, Talent, Fitness and Self-expression. For a display of her vocal talents, Sadie performed the Whitney Houston song, “I Have Nothing” for the March competition and will be performing “Wind Beneath My Wings” from the soundtrack of the Grammy Award winning film Beaches in the State competition. In addition to her talent, Sadie answered interview questions both on and off stage and competed in a challenging onstage fitness routine designed by DYW.
The DYW competition is not just a moment in time event as it considers each participant’s academic record, including ACT scores, as well as each participant’s involvement in their school and community.
Sadie is actively involved in numerous areas at Simpson County Academy including being a varsity cheerleader and active in organizations such as Future Business Leaders of America and Students Against Destructive Decisions. Sadie also has contributed her time over the past three years volunteering approximately 100 hours a year through organizations including being an Ambassador to the Mississippi Children’s Museum and being a member of Spirit Girls of Forrest General Hospital, which is a program providing the opportunity for young ladies to learn about good self-esteem, the importance of taking action for their health and of giving back to the community. Sadie also has performed and competed in numerous vocal events throughout the south east as well as participating in a week-long vocal training program in New York, in connection with the Winona Costello Agency. Sadie believes that all of these life lessons and accomplishments are enabling her to fully experience and enjoy the opportunities provided by the DYW program.
Sadie is also extremely grateful to the local businesses and individuals who have purchased ads in her support at the State Competition as well as those who have shared their experiences and knowledge of the Program with her to help her be successful.
