June 9, 1931 – November 15, 2020

Ruby Shelton, 89, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 15, 2020. Mrs. Shelton was born on June 9, 1931, to Jesse James and Laura Roberts Runnels in Simpson County, Mississippi, the second of four children. She graduated from Magee High School in 1949, and from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in 1951. She was employed in Hazlehurst and Jackson with the Mississippi Employment Security Commission. She married Charles Shelton on October 29, 1954 in Jackson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of fifty-four years, and her brother, Jessie James Runnels. She died at home with family and is survived by her four children, Charlene Jones (Steve) of Richland, MS; Ann Nored (Charles) of Murfreesboro, TN; Jesse Shelton (Connie) of San Antonio, TX; and Martha Wedgeworth (Bill) of Petal, MS; nine grandchildren: Stephanie Barrett (Wayne), Brian Jones; Amanda Counts (Aaron), Chris Nored, Shontel Willie (Charlie), Eddie Eifler, Brandon Shelton; Mark Wedgeworth, and Sarah Wedgeworth; and three great grandchildren, CJ, Connor and Abigail.

She is also survived by her brother, LJ Runnels of Magee, her sister, Carolyn Poole (Bill) of Madison, and her sister-in-law Jackie Runnels of Brandon, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was a member of First Baptist Church, Magee, MS and a former member of Oakhurst Baptist Church of Clarksdale, MS for over 35 years. She taught first grade Sunday School in Clarksdale for many years and also volunteered at the North Delta Baptist Ministry Center in Clarksdale along with her husband. She was a dedicated homemaker and encouraged many through her ministry of sending cards on various occasions. She was the long-time secretary for the Jim and Jake Roberts Family Reunion. She enjoyed canning home-grown vegetables and shared with others the bounty of their garden. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and hosted an annual Thanksgiving luncheon.

Memorials in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Baptist Children’s Village, PO Box 27, Clinton, MS 39060, or Sharon Cemetery Association, 373 Albert Runnels Road, Magee, MS 39111.

A memorial service for Mrs. Shelton will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 20, 2020, at First Baptist Church in Magee, MS. Due to COVID-19, please wear a mask. Brother Buddy Keyes will officiate.
