JACKSON, MISS. MDOT Information Systems (IS) and Right of Way (ROW) Divisions were recently awarded the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Excellence in Right of Way Innovation Award. The award recognizes MDOTs innovative parcel tracking system designed to manage all facets of the right of way process from personnel assignments to the issuance of the right of way certificate.
Providing a central location of data and recording information for every step in the ROW process, the parcel tracking system is a comprehensive one stop shop for all ROW related information and functions. The system also provides critical information at all levels that assists in reducing delays in the right of way process and project delivery. With the parcel tracking system, the accuracy of data has been greatly improved from the automatic creation of project information, numbering of parcels, linking associated parcels, built-in edit checks, accountability of data collection and availability of electronic documents.
The collaboration between the ROW and IS Divisions were critical to the success of the parcel tracking system. As a direct result of the creative concepts and innovative capabilities, the parcel tracking system further enhances collaboration, team building and accountability. Performance measures are more easily enforced and derived. This system has also helped ROW provide better cost estimates by successfully tracking estimates to actual expenditures and having historical information to reference, ultimately saving taxpayer dollars.
