(601) 649-3342 On March 18, 1950, James Michael Thompson was born to Shelby Belding Thompson and Wilma Runnels Thompson in Magee, Mississippi. He grew up in the Siloam Community of Simpson County and professed faith in Jesus Christ at 9 years of age at Siloam Baptist Church. On September 14, 1967, he married Wanda Nichols. God blessed them with two sons – Michael Wayne Thompson and John Keith Thompson. In March 1973, Mike sensed God’s call to the gospel ministry and the need to prepare for ministry work. He enrolled in Clarke College in Newton, Mississippi and completed his undergraduate work at Mississippi College in Clinton. He earned a Master of Arts in Ministry degree and a Master of Divinity degree from Luther Rice Seminary in Atlanta, Georgia. Over the last 43 years, “Bro. Mike” pastored churches in Simpson, Smith, Newton and Jones Counties. He organized and led many mission trips to various states and in the countries of Antigua, West Indies, Honduras and El Salvador. Preaching, pastoring and evangelism were his calling, but the Word of God and the memorization of it, was his passion. Among the many scripture passages he quoted often through the years were the Sermon on the Mount from Matthew 5, 6 and 7 and the Book of James. He also enjoyed memorizing the narration for musical worship programs such as “God with Us”, “God for Us” and “Experiencing God”. He would often memorize passages and poems for the weddings he officiated and comforting scripture and poetry for each funeral. Mike battled long and hard with heart disease, stroke, sepsis due to a weakened immune system, kidney failure and dialysis and the ever present “thorn in the flesh” psoriasis. His most recent battle was leukemia. “Mike”, “Hon”, “Dad”, and “Pawpaw” were his most cherished names. To hear a grandchild ask, “Pawpaw can you fix this?” or “Can you come to my program?” brought unspeakable joy to his heart. He is preceded in death by his parents, Shelby B. Thompson and Wilma Runnels Thompson. Survivors include his wife, Wanda Thompson of Laurel, sons, Wayne Thompson (Tina) of Laurel, Dr. Keith Thompson (Allyson) of Hattiesburg, grandchildren, Taylor Thompson, Peyton Grace Thompson, Will Michael Thompson, Claire Thompson, Riley Thompson, brother, Don Thompson of Ellisville.
