Rev. Howard Benton of Pearl, MS passed away on Saturday, November 12 at 91 years of age.
He was a wonderful husband, father and friend to many.
He was born in Mendenhall, Mississippi to Alonzo and Dovie Benton. His college years at Mississippi College were interrupted by WWII, where he served in the US Navy for 3 years. Once discharged, he went back to MC to complete his degree. It was during this time the Lord called him to preach and he went on to get a degree at New Orleans Baptist Seminary. During his ministry he served churches in Mississippi City, Prentiss, Pearl (Eastside Baptist – 25 yrs), Rock Bluff and Johns.
He is preceded in death by 3 sisters (Thelma Ponder, Aline Myers & Almeda Benton) and 3 brothers (Woodrow, Tom and Al Benton). He is survived by his wife Grace of 67 years, daughter Joan, one grandson Alex, sister-in-law Louise Benton and many nieces and nephews.
Fishing, hunting, watching Mississippi State football, and just talking with friends were his favorite pastimes. This world has lost a great warrior for Christ, a soul winner and I am so grateful to have called him Dad.
Visitation will be 5:00pm until 7:00pm Tuesday, November 15, 2016, at Brandon Baptist Church. Funeral service will be at 10:00am Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Brandon Baptist Church with Dr. Clarence Cooper and Dr. Ricky Gray officiating. Interment will be at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Mendenhall.
Donations can be made in memory of Howard Benton to the building programs of Flowood Baptist Church or Brandon Baptist Church.
