Repair Work on Lucas Administration Building Begins Sept. 8

Repairs and restorations to the Aubrey K. Lucas Administration Building on The University of Southern Mississippi’s Hattiesburg campus begin Tuesday, Sept. 8. The project timeline is 600 days, according to officials with the University’s Physical Plant.

Stabilizing the building’s foundation and replacing approximately 72 pieces of deteriorating terracotta are central to the $2.55 million project. Brick masonry repointing, replacement and cleaning, and repairs and revisions to the building’s porches and columns to improve access in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are included.

“There will be quite a bit of demolition involved in bringing the building back to its original grandeur,” said Associate Vice President for Facilities Planning and Management Dr. Chris Crenshaw. “Once the repairs are complete and the terracotta has been replaced, this iconic building will be strong enough to stand for generations to come.”

Members of the campus community and visitors are asked to avoid the construction area, and be aware of traffic to and from the building that will include delivery of material for the project. For more information about the project, contact the Southern Miss Physical Plant at 601.266.4414.
