Prentiss Christian JV Shines in Season Opener
By: Melissa Grace
There were a lot of questions coming into this season for the Prentiss Christian JV team. The biggest question to answer was how well they would do with only thirteen players. The Saints set out to prove that they could compete and compete they did Thursday night. Following a forfeit last week from the Heidelberg Rebels, the Saints hosted Ben’s Ford Christian School at 6:30. Last season BFCS beat the Saints on the final game of the season. PCS won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half. The Eagles took the opening kickoff at the 25 yard line and lost 2 yards on the return following good coverage by the Saints. Six plays later, the Eagles found the end zone on a long run around end. The 2pt conversion attempt was stopped giving the Eagles a quick 6-0 lead. However, the Saints would answer back in grand fashion as Wade Watkins took the following kickoff 67 yards for a touchdown. The 2pt conversion also failed knotting the game at 6 a piece. The Saints would force a three and out against the Eagles. Following the punt PCS got the ball on the 42 yard line. The Saints put together a 13 play drive that would finish out the 1st quarter and go well into the 2nd quarter. QB Jacob Anderson hit Watkins on a go route in the end zone and Watkins added the 2pt conversion on a run. PCS led 14-6. Watkins kickoff was taken by the Eagles at the 31 yard line with no return. The Eagles were able to move the ball into Saints territory, but the drive stalled when the Saints forced back to back fumbles as the half ended.
The Saints took the 2nd half kickoff all the way to the Eagles 30 yard line to get excellent field position. Unfortunately, they fumbled the next play and it was recovered by BFCS. In a drive that was riddled by penalties on both teams, the Eagles ran 18 plays and moved all the way to the Saints 5 yard line. The PCS defense stepped up and forced the Eagles back to the 13 yard line and stopped a big 4th and goal attempt to regain possession of the ball right there. 5 plays later, Anderson hit wide open TE Kade Greenlee for a 21 yard touchdown pass. The 2pt conversion was stopped, but the Saints had a 20-6 lead in the 4th quarter. Watkins’ kickoff was taken out to the 28 yard line of the Eagles. 3 plays later, Anderson stepped in front the Eagle pass for a 35 yard interception for touchdown. The 2pt conversion run by Watktins was good and the Saints had commanding 28-6 lead with time winding down in the game. Ben’s Ford had one more opportunity to find the end zone, but the Saints defense wouldn’t give in. PCS hosts Wayne Academy immediately following pee-wee action Thursday night.
