After the Board of Aldermen meeting held on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, Magee Police Chief Denis Borge took to the Magee Police Department’s official Facebook page to clarify details regarding a traffic incident that followed a police checkpoint.

During the meeting, Mayor Dale Berry stated that the police cars ran the vehicle off the road, and the city could potentially be held liable for damages related to two vehicles involved in a collision. However, Chief Borge’s post aimed to provide a clearer understanding of the events.  Berry’s statement was not factual.

According to reports, officers had set up a traffic checkpoint on 5th Avenue. A vehicle approaching the area made a sudden U-turn and sped away in the opposite direction, prompting officers to pursue. By the time police reached the vehicle, the driver had already crashed into two parked cars at a nearby car lot.

The incident remains under investigation. Body camera footage and a possible witness from a nearby grocery store may provide additional insight into the events that unfolded.

Dear citizens of Magee,
I would like to clarify misinformation that was shared by Mayor Berry during tonight’s board meeting.
Mayor Berry stated that he wanted to be transparent and mentioned there was a police chase Friday afternoon, during which officers allegedly ran the suspect’s vehicle off the road, resulting in two vehicles being totaled.
That statement is incorrect. While there was indeed a pursuit, it led to another active investigation, which is still ongoing. That is the reason the mugshot of the driver has not yet been posted.
The suspect collided with two parked vehicles located on the car lot as they tried to by pass traffic. At no point did any officer use a PIT maneuver or force the suspect’s vehicle off the road. Fortunately, this incident was captured on body worn camera, and we have a voluntary confession from the driver. The individual remains in jail at this time and is facing additional charges.
This message is to correct the misinformation given during the meeting.
The only person responsible for the damages is the driver, not the Magee Police Department and not the City of Magee. We follow strict policies and procedures when it comes to vehicle pursuits. But make no mistake, we will pursue when warranted. Magee will not become a city where criminals roam without consequence.
Sincerely
Chief Denis J. Borges
