Upon arrival and investigation of the scene and witnesses, it was determined that a southbound truck had fatally struck a pedestrian.

The pedestrian was identified as 68-year-old John Loftin Jr. aka ‘Sonny’ Loftin of Magee, MS. Unfortunately, Mr. Loftin was pronounced deceased at the scene by ASAP Ambulance personnel and the Simpson County Coroner.

It has come to our attention that several people have made irresponsible speculations and accusations about what happened on social media. This is uncalled for and only makes matters worse.

Our Agency is doing everything possible within our means to determine exactly what happened.

All the first responders involved, as well as the driver and witnesses, are sorry for the loss of Mr. Loftin.

Chief Jones asks that these false statements be removed and no longer posted. Chief Jones also asked that people not tell a story about what happened if you weren’t there to personally witness this tragic accident.

On behalf of the Magee Police Department, Chief Jones offers their deepest condolences and asks the community to pray for the family during this time.
