The Saints (2-1) hosted the undefeated Wayne Academy Jaguars Thursday night. Coming off a big win at home against Ben’s Ford last week, the Saints knew they had their hands full with a WA team loaded with 19 freshmen. The Jags won the opening toss and elected to defer to the 2nd half. WA kicked an onside kick that was mishandled by the Saints and recovered by the Jags on the Saints 39 yard line. Two long runs later the Jags found the end zone for their first touchdown. The 2pt conversion attempt was stopped giving WA a quick 6-0 lead. Wayne kicked off to Wade Watkins who returned the ball 15 yards to the 32 yard line. Unfortunately, one play later he fumbled and the Jags recovered on the Saints 30 yard line. The Saint defense put up a much better fight on short field position, but was not able to stop the Jags on fourth down. With a first and goal Wayne Academy found the end zone again on a 4 yard run. The 2pt conversion was stopped once more making the score 12-0 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter. After an 8 yard return on kickoff by Watkins, the Saint offense came alive. Following good blocking up front, Watkins, Jacob Anderson and Daniel Magee pounded the ball right down the field on 14 straight runs. Faced with a fourth and two at the Wayne 11 yard line the Saints fell short and turned the ball over on downs. The Jaguars put together a pretty good drive of their own, but he Saint defense fought back and forced a Jaguar punt that was returned by Watkins 6 yards to the Saint 21 yard line. The Saints were a quick three and out and had to punt back to the Jags. Kade Greenlee’s punt went 22 yards where it was downed for no gain. Two long passes set up a 1 yard TD run by the Jaguars, but again they were stopped on the 2pt conversion attempt. After a 20 yard kick return by Watkins the half ended with the Saints trailing 18-0. The Saints saw a gap in the Jaguar line and attempted an onside kick of their own to open the second half, but the Jaguars recovered with good field position. Wayne put together a 6 play 51 yard drive capped off by a 5 yard TD run. The 2pt conversion failed giving Wayne a 24-0 lead in the third quarter. The WA kickoff was taken by Greenlee and returned 9 yards to the Saint 30 yard line. That is as far as the PCS drive would go and Greenlee had to punt again. The snap was high and sailed over the punter and was recovered by Wayne Academy on the Saint 1 yard line. One play later they would add their final touchdown followed by a 2pt conversion. The score was now 32-0 late in the third quarter. The Jaguar kick was taken by Watkins who found a seam behind the Saint blockers and returned the ball 80 yards for a touchdown. Anderson kept the ball around the end for the 2pt conversion making it 32-8. PCS kicked off to the 20 yard line with no return. The Jags moved the ball out to the 37 yard line but were stopped by the Saints on fourth down. Time expired on the game before the Saints could get another drive going. Prentiss travels to Clinton Thursday night to face the Clinton Christian Warriors.
