MCCOMB, MISS. – Commissioner Tom King, Southern Transportation District, has announced updates to several Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects in southwest Mississippi.

“I’m pleased to report that a very productive construction season has resulted in significant progress made on infrastructure projects in southwest Mississippi, with quite a few now complete,” said Commissioner Tom King. “As always, more work is on the horizon to continue to improve the safety and efficiency of our state’s transportation network for the benefit of the traveling public.”

Bridge replacement on State Route 149 ongoing in Simpson County

A project is underway to replace three bridges on State Route 149 in Simpson County. The Sellers Creek Bridge (Bridge No. 128.6), the Dabbs Creek Bridge (Bridge No. 131.7) and the Dabbs Creek Relief Bridge on SR 149 are closed while the project is underway. At the Sellers Creek Bridge, production piles are finished, and caps will soon be poured. Caps are being formed at the Dabbs Creek Relief Bridge, and the contractor is driving production piles at the Dabbs Creek Bridge.

This $25 million contract was awarded to T.L. Wallace of Columbia, and Phase I of the project is expected to wrap up in summer 2024. Phase II will involve the replacement of the Strong River Bridge and will begin after Phase I is complete.

Bridge replacement on U.S. 98 begins soon in Franklin County

A project to replace an aging truss bridge with a modern post-tension concrete bridge is set to begin in early November on U.S. 98 over the Homochitto River in Franklin County. The scope of work also includes the construction of new drainage structures on each side of the bridge as well as construction of approximately 2,500 feet of new roadway. U.S. 98 will be closed between State Route 556 and Berrytown Rd. while construction is ongoing.

This $25.7 million contract was awarded to Key, LLC of Madison and is expected to be completed in summer 2026.

Overlay, intersection improvements continue on U.S. 49 in Simpson County

A $17.2 million project to overlay 10 miles of U.S. 49 from Magee to Mendenhall and to make intersection improvements on U.S. 49 from Goodwater Rd. to First Ave. is underway. Asphalt work is complete, and shoulder work and striping are underway.

The contract was awarded to APAC – Mississippi, Inc. of Richland and is expected to be completed in winter 2024.

Overlay on U.S. 98 in Walthall County underway

An overlay project is underway on 5 miles of U.S. 98 from Industrial Park Rd. to Old Highway 98 East. Paving is complete, and shoulder gravel, rumble strips and final stripe are being placed.

The $5.2 million contract was awarded to Dickerson & Bowen, Inc. of Brookhaven and is expected to be completed fall 2023.

Mill, overlay of U.S. 84 now complete in Adams County

A mill and overlay project on approximately 5 miles of U.S. 84 from U.S. 61 to Dunbarton Rd. to is now complete. This nearly $5 million contract was awarded to APAC.

Mill and overlay now complete on State Route 24 in Amite County

A $3.5 million project is now complete in Amite County to mill and overlay State Route 24 from the west city limits of Liberty to just west of Velma St. Milling. This contract was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen, Inc.

Mill and overlay underway on U.S. 84 in Lincoln County

A project is underway in Lincoln County to mill and overlay the paved shoulders, local roads and crossovers of approximately 5 miles of U.S. 84 from U.S. 51 to Monticello St. NE. Concrete work has been completed and asphalt paving is taking place on shoulders and crossovers.

This $2.9 million project was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen, Inc. and is expected to be completed in fall 2023.

Slide, erosion repairs now complete on U.S. 61 in Adams County

Slide and erosion repairs are now complete on U.S. 61, approximately 0.9 miles north of Kingston Rd. in Adams County. This $2.9 million contract was awarded to Dozer, LLC of Natchez.

Overlay complete on State Route 149 in Simpson County

A $2.5 million overlay project is now complete in Simpson County to pave approximately 6 miles of State Route 149 from Industrial Park Dr. to Athens Rd. The contract was awarded to APAC.

Overlay underway on State Route 43 in Lawrence County

An overlay project recently began on State Route 43 from County Road 43A to State Route 184 in Lawrence County. The $3 million project was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen, Inc. and is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

Widening and overlay complete on State Route 28 in Simpson County

A $1.9 million project is now complete in Simpson County to widen and overlay approximately 4 miles of State Route 28 from SR 149 in Magee to the Smith County line. This project was awarded to APAC.

Widening and overlay underway on State Route 43 in Simpson County

A project to widen and overlay approximately 8 miles of State Route 43 from State Route 28 to State Route 13 in Simpson County recently began. The $2.6 million project was awarded to AJ Construction of Pearl and is expected to be completed in summer 2024.

Slide, erosion repairs nearing completion on U.S. 61 in Wilkinson County

A project is nearing completion to repair a slide on U.S. 61 in Wilkinson County approximately 0.3 miles north of the intersection of U.S. 61 and Cold Springs Rd. Work is complete and awaiting final inspection.

The $1.3 million project was awarded to Midway Construction of Roxie and is expected to be completed in fall 2023.
