JudyWe are so sad to hear the news of the passing of Magee’s own, Judy Akers.   She touched so many lives and will be greatly missed.

Judy Ann Travis Akers, 60, of Magee, MS, succumbed to her battle with cancer on June 19, 2015. She passed peacefully at Simpson General Hospital with loving family and friends continuously by her side.

Judy was born March 9, 1955 in Springhill, LA to Grady E. Travis and Jessie H. Travis. She grew up in Magee, MS and was a 1973 graduate of Magee High School.  That same year she married the love of her life, Chuck Akers, and together they had three children–April, Amy and Tommy.

The New Year: A Time for Change and New Goals

December 27, 2025

After raising her family, Judy fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a teacher and graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with a BS in Elementary Education in 1999. Her entire teaching career was devoted to the Simpson County School District where she touched countless lives both in and out of the classroom. She was an asset to the teaching profession and was honored with the teacher of the year award 3 times during her time teaching career.

Her love of teaching came second only to her love of family. She was especially proud of her 9 grandchildren who affectionately called her “Granny”.

Preceding Judy in death are her mother, Jessie H. Travis; sister, Debra McNeil and sister in spirit, Barbara Holt.

Judy is survived by her father, Grady E. Travis; husband of 42 years, Chuck Akers;  daughters, April (Wesley) Garner and Amy Akers Purser (David Johnson ); son, Tommy Akers and son in spirit,  Mike W. Davis; brothers, Gary Travis (June) and Larry Travis (Judy); brother in spirit, Danny Joe Holt; sister,  Kathy Wolfe (Morris) and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.

Judy’s prides in life  were her “grands”–Jessi Davis, Evan Purser, Julia Davis, Emma Purser, Cassidy Akers, Kaden Garner, Wyatt Davis, Lily Davis and Morgan Johnson

Judy also leaves behind her beloved and faithful dog, Earl.

A memorial service will be held Monday, June 22, 2015 at Tutor Funeral Home in Magee at 8:00 pm with visitation from 6:00 – 8:00 pm.  It is Judy’s wish that, in lieu of flowers, a love offering be made in her memory to St. Dominic’s Foundation: Patient Caring, 601-200-6910 or mail to St. Dominic’s Foundation c/o Ann Huff 969 Lakeland Drive 39216. Her family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at both St. Dominic and Simpson General Hospitals for the exceptional care provided not only to our wife and mother, but to us as well. Your kindness and compassion will be remembered always.

Arrangements are entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
