Saturday night, July 23rd, a reunion of former McLaurin High School and Magee High School football players met for a gathering of “talking football…and the way we were.”
Under the direction of Coach Earnest Jaynes, his committee did an outstanding job promoting the event. Approximately 200 former Magee football players gathered to swap stories and make plans for supporting the present and future football teams.
Now, don’t think I didn’t want to be there…and I certainty thought because I was a “former” cheerleader, I should have been included…but no, this was a guy’s event! Guys who had actually worn either a McLaurin football jersey or a Magee football jersey. I couldn’t pout too long…because I was so excited about the event!
Coach Jaynes put his heart and soul into this event. In fact, the idea actually came to him in a dream. “I believe God set this plan in motion through a dream…and I just followed His way,” explained Jaynes.
I don’t have a lot of pictures from Saturday’s event…because like I said…no women and nothing but football players!
If you have pictures from the event and you are willing to share with me, I would greatly appreciate! (sue@mageenews.com).
Coach Jaynes came Monday morning to give me the scoop on Saturday night’s event. He was one excited guy! The oldest coach in attendance was Jack Bailey. Coach Jaynes spoke of how he enjoyed the history that Bailey shared with the group. The “oldest” player in attendance was Bill Caughman, a former MHS quarterback!…and by the way…Bill is 82!!!
Bob Everett and his crew provided a delicious meal. From the 40’s to the 2000’s every decade was represented.
Earnest hopes to make the event an annual gathering. He has plans for tailgating at some of the Magee games this year…recognition of past teams…and encouraging the involvement of former players in our present touchdown club.
Membership for the TD Club is only $30. Checks may be mailed to P. O. Box 385. Magee< MS 39111. Donations of any amount are appreciated.
I hope you will enjoy Coach Jaynes’ recap of the Saturday night meeting!
Do you still bleed red and gray? I know a lot of people who do…keep that school spirit going! You are needed.

What a great event! Congratulations, Coach Jaynes for the fabulous idea!!!
