Testing by the MSDH Public Health Laboratory has confirmed one human case of West Nile virus in a Rankin County resident, and three new cases of Zika virus infection in Mississippians returning from travel to Jamaica, Guatemala, and St. Thomas (U.S. Virgin Islands).
Zika remains a serious threat to the developing child of pregnant women. Pregnant women should not travel to countries where Zika virus is being actively transmitted, and all travelers to these areas should take precautions against Zika while abroad and after returning home.
West Nile virus usually causes mild or no symptoms, but in some cases it can cause severe illness, paralysis or death. West Nile can affect any Mississippian at any time of the year, but peak season is July through September.
