Nellie (Tommie) Cowart Layton, 93 of Mendenhall, Mississippi, passed away from her earthly home to her heavenly home on Saturday, January 14, 2023, in Mendenhall, Mississippi. She was born on Thursday, October 24, 1929, in Franklin County, Mississippi.
Tommie was a loving daughter, wife, aunt, and friend to many. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mendenhall. She was a native of Franklin County, where she graduated school. She then attended and graduated from Jackson Commercial College in Jackson, Mississippi. She was a retired office manager at Cal-Maine Foods in Mendenhall.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Ray Layton; parents, Noah and Pearl Cowart; sisters, Elaine Lovett, Doris Francis and Marie Head.
Survivors include her six nieces and nephews; Fred Lovett, Sonny Childers, Bruce Childers, Carolyn Phillips, Melissa Francis and Judy Draper; great nieces and nephews; Chevis Hughes, Charles Phillips, Zachary Phillips, Duke Lovett, Will Draper, Cade Childers, Brock Childers, Fran Ingram and Emily Fairchild; many great-great nieces and nephews’ and friends; Donnie and Sue Caughman and Brad White.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home, 3077 Simpson Hwy 13, Mendenhall, Mississippi.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at Colonial Chapel Funeral Home. The burial will follow in Poplar Springs Baptist Church in Mendenhall, Mississippi. Rev. James Smith will officiate. Special music will be provided by Mr. Buddy Mullins. Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Mendenhall is in charge of arrangements. 601-847-4401
Pallbearers will be Brad White, Donnie Caughman, Randall Neely, Gary Williams, Buddy Mullins, and Jerry Gray.
Honorary pallbearer will be Derek Caughman.
