The Mississippi State Department of Health and the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to monitor the current outbreak of respiratory illness caused by the novel (new) coronavirus 2019-nCoV first reported in Wuhan, China. This virus has spread rapidly from person to person within China as well as internationally, and is responsible for hundred of deaths worldwide. The CDC is cautioning against non-essential travel to China.
While several cases of coronavirus infection have been confirmed in the U.S., they are all among returning travelers or their close contacts. Mississippians are not currently considered at risk from this virus unless they have recently traveled to China or have been in close contact with someone who has confirmed infection with 2019-nCoV, or who is under investigation for infection. No cases of coronavirus 2019-nCoV have been identified in Mississippi, and there are no persons being investigated as possible cases.
