Magee Police Officer Matt Sullivan discovers stolen vehicle while on routine patrol.
According to a press release issued by Police Chief Randy Crawford, Sullivan was checking businesses Wednesday, April 8, 2015, patrolling the area near Hwy 149. As Officer Sullivan approached the Shell Station, which was closed, he observed a red van with several occupants, who then took off at a high rate of speed.
Officer Sullivan caught up with the vehicle, traveling North on Hwy 49, and subsequently initiated a traffic stop. Officers Matt Gipson and Joey Shows arrived moments later to assist. Shortly thereafter, Officer Sullivan ran the vehicle’s license plate and was informed by Magee dispatchers that the vehicle was reported stolen.
The driver, identified as George Edward Jones, was then found to have a suspended driver’s license. Jones was taken into custody and charged with DUI-Other, Careless Driving, Driving with License Suspended, and Possession of Stolen Property.
Chief Crawford commented on Officer Sullivan and other officers involved stating, “His [Sullivan’s] keen observation to detail and the due diligence of all of the officers in their constant checking of all the local businesses, which led to the recovery of the stolen vehicle.”
