Mississippi to Graduate Second Emerging Leaders Class
After spending eight months and more than 100 hours of work in evening classes, five small businesses in Jackson, MS will graduate from the U.S. Mississippi Small Business Administration’s 2016 Emerging Leaders Executive Training program.
The graduates will celebrate during their during a graduation program scheduled 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 20th at the SBA Mississippi District Office’s 10th floor conference room located at 210 E. Capitol Street in Jackson, MS.
The SBA Emerging Leaders Initiative is a federal training initiative that specifically focuses on executives of businesses poised for growth in historically challenged communities. This is the SBA Mississippi District’s second class of the Emerging Leaders initiative which provides executives the organizational framework, resource network and motivation to grow their businesses while promoting economic development within challenged urban communities.” John Brandon, Instructor and retiree of the Mississippi Development Authority, provided the curriculum.
The five Jackson based entrepreneurs completing the Emerging Leaders training are:
· Tony Lewis, CiViLTech, Inc.
· Lela Hubbard, Donelson Enterprises
· Morris Driver, Driver Technology Consulting
· Damien Murriel, Memorial Funeral Services
· Tonya Ware, The Church Triumphant Global
In February of this year, Mississippi began its second year in identifying businesses that met the program requirements of the firm having been in business for at least 3 years, have annual revenues of at least $400,000 and have at least one employee other than themselves.
Research has shown that participating businesses are more engaged with their clients and staff, are focused on development and expansion of strategies, have greater access to capital, government contracts. Better yet, the new jobs create a tax base which attracts investment and provides a more sustainable economic base in distressed areas. The Emerging Leaders Initiative has aided over 2,000 small business owners in sustaining and growing their businesses since its introduction in 2007.
