Mendenhall Junior High Wins Outstanding School Award

Mississippi school honored for Literacy Design Collaborative, Mathematics Design Collaborative teaching strategies

July 11, 2016 — Mendenhall Junior High School in Mississippi’s Simpson County School District won the Outstanding LDC-MDC School Award from the Southern Regional Education Board for its schoolwide implementation of the Literacy Design Collaborative and Mathematics Design Collaborative teaching strategies. The school was honored at SREB’s College- and Career-Readiness Standards Networking Conference July 11 in Louisville, Kentucky.

Under the leadership of principal Kirby Craft, Mendenhall Junior High implemented the research-based tools schoolwide. The staff, teachers and principal created an environment for transforming instruction in literacy and math. The principal supported teachers by providing planning time to create and revise lessons and improve in using MDC and LDC, leading to opportunities for teachers to present on the framework at state and national conferences. Teachers have seen improvement in student achievement in math, literacy and other discipline areas.

SREB’s College- and Career-Readiness Standards Networking Conference brings together educators to learn and improve classroom strategies with the Literacy Design Collaborative and the Mathematics Design Collaborative frameworks. LDC and MDC have re-energized thousands of teachers by creating a collaborative environment that builds teacher confidence and student learning. The 2016 conference, the fourth annual, is in Louisville, Kentucky, July 11-13.

The Southern Regional Education Board works with states and educators to improve public education at every level, from early childhood through postsecondary education.
