Mendenhall High School Students and Local First Responders Put on Mock Wreck Simulation
As the students of Mendenhall High School (MHS) prepare for a night to remember, in anticipation of prom, they were reminded of the consequences that could happen if they choose to drink and drive.
In its ninth year, the Prom Promise Mock Wreck simulation was held on the MHS campus to highlight the disastrous – sometimes fatal – events that could arise if a drunk driver sits behind a steering wheel. The MHS student body stood by as they watched their peers and local first responders demonstrate a simulation of a head-on collision, involving a drunk driver.
Members of the MHS Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) student organization portrayed the victims and suspects involved in the car wreck, while representatives from local emergency services responded to the scene.
The simulation was helped carried out by the Mendenhall Fire Department, Mendenhall Police Department, Simpson County Sheriff’s Department, ASAP Emergency Ambulance Services, Simpson Co. Wrecker Service and Auto Sales, Simpson General Hospital, J&M Funeral Home, PHI Air Medical, National Weather Service of Jackson, and EMA.
Captain Allen Griffin of the Mendenhall Fire Department said that the demonstration was especially important to him because he lost a brother 20 years ago to a drunk driver.
“If we can save one kid from drinking or driving or texting and driving tomorrow night, all this week of planning was worth showing that one kid that it’s not worth it,” said Griffin.
