SCRIPT: Here at the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT), 2020 had many highs and lows; along with the pandemic, south Mississippi was slammed with historic Easter tornadoes that wreaked havoc throughout multiple counties. There were also a record number of hurricanes that rocked the United States this year, many of them impacting the Mississippi Gulf Coast. These unpredictable twists and turns seemed to never stop in 2020, but neither did MDOT.
MDOT was able to adapt and find safe and efficient ways to continue helping Mississippians, whether that was through public transit, road maintenance or construction, MDOT worked to keep Mississippi moving.
MDOT wrapped up several projects throughout south Mississippi this year. Down on the coast, the Harrison County interchange improvement project on Interstate 10 was completed. This project widened County Farm Road along with the northeast ramp. A little further north in Covington County, two projects were finished and opened for drivers this year. The first was an intersection improvement project on U.S. Highway 49; crews relocated and reconstructed four roads to make each intersection safer for drivers entering U.S. 49. The second was a bridge preservation project on U.S. Highway 84. Another bridge preservation project was also finished up over in Greene County on State Route 42.
But as things were wrapping up on some southern projects work was ramping up on others. In Forrest County, an interchange construction project on Interstate 59 and SR 42 made major headway. Crews were able to open the southbound exit ramps and work to complete the SR 42 overpass is moving forward. Pearl River County is also seeing progress on a highway reconstruction project on U.S. Highway 11. Once complete U.S. 11 will be widened into four lanes.
There were also numerous lottery-funded projects throughout south Mississippi. More than 105 miles of highway were resurfaced including parts of U.S. 49 and 51 in Harrison and Pike Counties, and sections of State Routes 37 and 26 in Smith and Stone counties. Throughout the entire state, MDOT was able to resurface over 280 miles of highway.
Despite the uncertainty that came with 2020 it didn’t slow anything down for MDOT, and as we look forward to what the new year brings remember if 2020 didn’t stop MDOT from moving forward, nothing will.
