MDOT honors fallen workers at memorial ceremony in Jackson
JACKSON, MISS.—In recognition of National Work Zone Awareness Week in Mississippi, the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) hosted a ceremony in honor of the employees that lost their lives while working to improve the state’s roadways.

The Fallen Worker Memorial Ceremony, which took place at the MDOT headquarters in Jackson today, brought together the families of fallen roadside workers to remember and pay tribute to their loved ones who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.
“We talk a lot about MDOT being a family. Never it is more evident than after a tragedy that impacts us, our family and our friends,” said Brad White, MDOT Executive Director. “Work zones safety awareness has never been a more important cause than it is today with cell phone use and distracted driving ever increasing. As a driver, hold yourself accountable. As a passenger, hold your friends and family accountable. Together we can eliminate this problem, but we must do our part, day in and day out.”
During the ceremony, MDOT Chief Engineer Brian Ratliff read the names of each fallen worker aloud. Each name represents a life lost, a family forever changed and a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who work along state highways daily.
“As we reflect on the lives and service of our fallen workers, we must also renew our commitment to work zone safety,” said Commissioner Willie Simmons, Central Transportation District. “It is our responsibility to take action to help prevent further tragedies and protect the lives of those that work to improve our infrastructure. As drivers, we must be vigilant and follow all traffic signs in work zones. Slow down, be patient and prepare for changing conditions. Distracted driving, speeding and reckless behavior have no place in work zones.”
