Matthew Patrick Rankin, age 37, passed away on Friday, October 29, 2021, in Baton Rouge, LA. He was born to David M. Rankin and Cynthia (Rhatigan) Rankin on July 6, 1984, in Flowood, MS. He was a member of the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma.
He entered the United States Army at the age of seventeen. As a Sergeant with the United States Army Special Forces, Matthew was deployed to both Afghanistan and Iraq. He was awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star (received twice), Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal. He attended the University of Mississippi where he met his future wife, Lauren. He graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. Matthew was an American treasure and will be remembered and honored as such.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lauren (Waters) Rankin; mother, Cynthia Rankin; brother, Brett Rankin and sister, Shannon Kimes (Jeffery).
He was preceded in death by his father, David M. Rankin.
A graveside service will be held for family and friends at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 6, 2021, at Poplar Springs Baptist Church Cemetery in Mendenhall, MS.
