Martha Smith Thames went to her heavenly home on Sunday, August 11, 2019, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on December 20, 1934, to Ray Kelly Smith and Emmai Gallman Smith in Drew, MS.
Martha grew up in Drew, MS and graduated from Delta State. Her first teaching job was in Brandon where she met her husband-to-be after removing his brother, G.T., from her music class. Frank hitchhiked home from Fort Bragg, NC to marry Martha in 1957. They had a loving, faithful marriage and showed love to all who entered their home. Martha had her first child at 24 and twins at 24.
Martha retired from Mendenhall Elementary in 1992 to come home and play with her first grandchild, Taylor. She loved all the children she taught. She will be remembered as modest and selfless. She didn’t like meanness and loved a “happy ending.” Martha will forever be missed and remembered for her generous, unfailing love and zest for life that every child should be blessed to know in a parent.
She is survived by her daughters, Pam Thames Jones (Kent), Alicia Thames Delpriore (Ken), Tricia Thames Nichols; four grandchildren, Martha Taylor Gable (Josh), Ryan Nichols, Jace Jones, Laura Leigh Hilton; great-grandchildren, Breanna Jones, Kyson Gable, Krew Gable and Kipp Gable.
