AND THEY’RE OFF! The MHS Band’s 2023 show was the “Magee Grand Prix”. With banners of a racetrack behind them, the band performed three movements that included fast-paced marching and color guard flag changes from green to yellow to a finish line flag. This was not an easy show for this young band. When was the last time you tried to carry a heavy bass drum and perform with precision or keep your breath as a brass / woodwind player to finish a difficult set? The band practiced countless hours including six days a week at times preparing for Friday Night Lights and their season ending Marching Contests.
The band has made great strides in the past two years under new director, Nathan Lucky. He has worked tirelessly to help move this program in the right direction. He is assisted by Middle School Director, Brad Sumrall. The band crossed the finish line at the Copiah Marching Festival with all superior ratings in all categories and finished third out of 20 bands ahead of some traditionally strong programs. The next week they fell just short of all superiors at Pearl in the State Band Evaluations. There is no doubt that this band is moving toward being able to compete at the state band championship.
The work doesn’t stop for this group. They will continue to support the football team as they look to make a run in the playoffs. Preparation is already underway for the Christmas Parade and Christmas Concert.
Please congratulate these young people and directors when you get a chance and if the opportunity arises, support them financially. It takes strong community support to have a top-level band program.
We are proud of the Magee High Trojan Band!
