Magee High School has had many changes this year, but one of the biggest has been the band recruiting a new drum major. Macie West has taken over the position and is very optimistic about this year’s marching season.

When asked what made her try out for drum major, Macie responded, “Trying out for drum major is something I wasn’t planning on doing at the beginning of my freshman or sophomore year. I thought it was pretty cool to watch Kameron Durr, the band’s previous drum major, yet I never considered it for myself. I started to consider it during concert season and decided to talk to our band director and Kameron on how to learn and get started. Once I started learning the basics, I found it pretty fascinating and decided to keep learning and try out.”

I asked Macie how being drum major has influenced her and she replied with “Being drum major has changed me musically by learning the importance of every single crescendo, decrescendo, rest, etc. It has changed me personally by seeing the importance of teamwork. The band is one family, and our family runs off of teamwork and pride. Becoming drum major has helped me to also open up and get to know everyone in band better. I’m humbled and blessed to be able to represent the Pride of Simpson County.”

The theme of the band’s halftime show is Humans vs. Heroes. It is inspired by Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. Macie says that she “absolutely loves the show this year” and “can not wait to see the whole show once it is completely finished.”
