The Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, March 15, 2022. All Aldermen, the Mayor, the City Clerk, and the City Attorney were present for the meeting.

The minutes and claim docket were approved.

Police Officer Ben Stephens updated the Board of Alderman on a camera system for the city.  Mr Stephens explained the system he felt was best was Fusus.  Several cities in our state use this system and are very pleased with the results.

The board tabled the purchasing of the system until Officer Stephens brings a firm price.

Parks and Rec Director David Dunn reminded the Mayor and Board he will retire from the recreational division of his job March 31, 2022.  Mr. Dunn will continue managing the zoning issues until the end of June.  David recommended Jimmy Zilla, who has been with the City Parks and Rec Department for 16 years, to move into his position.  Daniel Decker will then move to Mr. Zilla’s  position allowing the hiring of two additional employees. The Board made the decision to post the jobs rather than hire from within.  Job postings are listed on MageeNews.com

Three new positions were publicized as taking applications. Chief of Police, City of Magee Parks and Recreation Director, and Zoning Director (part-time). Application must be returned  by April 4, 2022. Interviews will be April 11, 2022.  At the April 19, 2022 meeting the positions will be filled.

Austin Brown, contract IT employee, updated the Board on the progress of the updated web site for the city.  Mr. Brown suggested a government website that is built for city government would be the best site.  The site would allow heads of any department to have an area on the site for posting. According to Mr. Brown, the site is very user friendly for citizens and employees.  Once Marc McMillian, City Attorney, studies the contract, the Board will proceed with approval.

Alderman Sue Honea requested an update on the City Jail.  The Mayor and Police Chief said they were working on the situation in anticipation of a jail survey by the State.

The situation of 18 wheelers parking on city streets was discussed.  The Mayor said additional signs will be placed in the areas where there is a problem.

Ashley Steele, Airport Manager, provided the board with a proposal for  maintenance on the tanks at a cost of $4,190.21.  The situation of someone teaching flying lessons at the airport was discussed.  At this time, teaching lessons is illegal.  Ashley reminded everyone subleasing is not allowed of any hangers at the airport.  The situation with one of the older and larger hangers was discussed.  The City Attorney is to research the actual owner of the larger hanger.   Steele mentioned the mower had been purchased and the area has already been cut.

Building Inspector Phillip Magee reported that fiber optic will be installed at the Fire Department, City Hall, and Public Works.

Shane Steele advised the board the house located on 4th Avenue SW that was slated for demolition has been torn down.  The area still requires cleaning but the structure is down.  Non operative  vehicles are being moved.  Shane requested anyone having a problem to contact his office.

Police Chief Allen Martin requested the hiring of Eric Brown full time patrol, Philip Allen part time dispatcher, and Candice McGill full time dispatcher.  The board approved the hirings.

Fire Marshal Charlie Valadie reported a good meeting was held with Polk’s Meats concerning the problem of disposal of  plant products in the City sewage.  Valadie said a solution will be found which is in agreement of both parties.
