The Magee Board of Alderman met Tuesday, August 4, 2020 for their regular scheduled meeting.

The Mayor’s report was given by Mayor Dale Berry: Berry thanked Charlie and Donna Durning for supplying the Magee Police Department with gift cards last week. Numerous people and business have supplied food and gifts for the police department. The police department appreciate their generosity. Berry advised the city crews were busy cleaning at the city barn. A special shout out was given to Alderman Lane Steele for the work he and the fire department did cleaning flower bushes located at the library. The YMCA building is complete. City crews will be moving tables and chairs shortly. The building will not open until after the pandemic.

The alderman approved publishing information in the Magee Courier regarding  hearings  for the upcoming budget meetings.

Norman Miller with ASAP, local ambulance service, met before the board for any questions concerning ambulance service. Miller advised due to lack of space at most hospitals some patients were  transferred numerous miles away which in return takes ambulances out of our area for longer periods of time.

The city honored the Marvin Jackson family with a dedication announcement of the Marvin Jackson Park formally known as Washington Park. Members of the family were present. A sign and dedication ceremony will be held at a later date.

The road located at the end of Bigland Heights, which has been a topic of discussion for weeks now, will require a public hearing to close the road according to Attorney Bruce Smith A public hearing will be held to close the 95 foot strip located between Mr. Pearce’s home and Mr. Bryant’s home.   A date for the hearing will be announced and advertised.

Ms. Deborah Hylender came before the board with concerns of a tree located next to her property.  The tree is on abandon property and is in poor condition with large limbs falling from the tree.  Board members inspected the property and agreed to remove the tree due to a safety hazard.

Nevis Rankin announced his retirement from the city effective the end of January 2021. The board desires to have a new person in place by November 2020 to trained under Rankin. Application are being taken at City Hall.

In Police matters, Paula Harvey submitted her resignation as full time dispatcher to attend school. Ms Harvey was approved to work part-time as a dispatcher. Mr. Lynn Easting presented his resignation requesting to move from full-time officer to part-time. The board approved to hire Joseph McNair as a part-time officers. The board approved to move Joe Jenkins from part-time officer to full-time officer.

Park Director David Dunn advised the board the sanding for all the outfields at the Sportsplex will cost approximately $14,500.00.  Repairs will begin in the coming weeks.
