The Magee Board of Alderman met for their regular scheduled meeting Tuesday, July 21, 2020.
Mayor Berry advised the public the City of Magee is under a mandatory mask order issued by the Governor of Mississippi. Anyone entering buildings within Simpson County is required to wear a mask. The City of Magee will abide by the governors orders.
Mayor Dale Berry reminded the citizens that all tree contractors must be licensed and are responsible for removal of limb debris.
The individual responsible for certifying the mosquito truck equipment will be in town by the end of the week to inspect and certify the vehicle. As soon as vehicle is certified spraying will begin.
Annual sales tax for the city are at an all time high. Mayor Berry was excited especially to accomplish the goal during a pandemic.
The board advised city workers that they have been given notice to clean the barn area. The board will conduct an inspection in the coming weeks.
The City of Magee has hosted back to back weekend ball tournaments. The Cal Ripken boys State tournament was held during the weekend of July 11th and the girls State Utrip tournament was held this past weekend. The tournaments brought many families to the cities and help sales within the city during this time.
Brandy Lane was approved as the new name for a street located in the Whispering Pines Subdivision.
The board voted to rename the newly acquired property, Washington Park, to the Marvin Jackson Park. A dedication ceremony will take place at a later date.
Keiffer Grimes updated the board on the airport. The Jet A tank part should arrive next week and as soon as it is replaced the grant can close out hopefully in August. The windsock has been replaced.
The city hired Mark Russell as the new Dog Catcher. The job is a part time position.
The board approved to hire John Hosey as a full-time police officer and Joseph Jenkins as a part-time officer at the recommendation of Chief Randy Crawford.
The board approved to declare the old air packs located at the fire department surplus property. The department will now be allowed to sale the air packs.
A budget workshop is scheduled for August 4, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. A public herring on the budget will take place August 20, 2002 at 5:05 p.m. at City Hall. The board will adopt the budget and set tax levy at the September 15, 2020 board meeting.
The board dismissed to go into executive session to hire a City Prosecutor. After the executive session, the board announced Wesley Broadhead has been hired as the City Prosecutor to begin immediately.
