CLEVELAND — Mississippi Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser joined here today to promote the cultural and musical heritage of the two states as they work together to grow their respective states’ tourism industries.
“Our two states share a deep connection in so many areas, whether its food, music, history or a love of the outdoor sports,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “Through tourism, we can highlight the contributions of our talented citizens to these areas and grow the economies in our towns.”
Both Lt. Gov. Reeves and Lt. Gov. Nungesser plan to explore ways the states can build on their shared histories to attract more visitors to towns across their states.
“Our states share music, culture, and the largest river in North America. The partnership with Mississippi and our shared goals to promote the rich cultural history of our people, will increase the offerings our states can provide to visitors from across the country and the world,” said Lt. Gov. Nungesser, who also serves as leader of Louisiana’s tourism initiatives.
The lieutenant governors met with members of the Mississippi Tourism Association to discuss ways to partner on promotional efforts. One such effort is already underway in the participation by both states in the National Geographic’s Mississippi River Geotourism Project spearheaded by the Delta Regional Authority. The initiative will focus on region’s unique character, heritage and beauty and encouraging visitors to states up and down the Mighty Mississippi to experience the authentic stories and places found only along this great river.
“I appreciate the opportunity to highlight the potential for Mississippi and Louisiana to work together to accentuate the wonderful tourism assets that each of our states have to offer,” said Rochelle Hicks, executive director of the Mississippi Tourism Association.
The men helped celebrate the construction of the new Lyric Hotel near the Grammy Museum Mississippi. The planned luxury hotel by Greenwood businessman Suresh Chawla will feature a four-star restaurant, special event venue and spa.
Lt. Gov. Nungesser’s visit ended with a tour of the Grammy Museum, which highlights the contributions of Mississippi artists to the music industry.
