The Scriptural passage chosen for today is found in Luke 12:15: “He said to them, ‘Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.'” This verse speaks against what most are taught from birth: amassing wealth and possessions brings one happiness. We who are Christians have learned and know, however, that it goes against all the teachings of Jesus. Great wealth and houses filled to overflow with possessions do not necessarily bring one happiness, contentment, or peace of mind. As Christians, let us, instead, busy ourselves with seeing to the needs of the less fortunate and ministering to the sick in body and spirit. In so doing, our attention will be taken from ourselves. Isn’t that more in line with what God would have us do? We came into this world naked, and we will depart in like manner. “Only one life. It will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last.” This religious slogan hung on my grandmother’s wall for many years. I’m convinced all the more, as I look beyond my 80 years, that only what we do for others in Jesus’ name will follow us into the next. Amen!
