Lane Roland Jr. passed away on January 4, 2023, at Merit Health. He was born to P.L. Roland Sr. and Mattie Lee Tice Roland, on October 27, 1940.
After graduating from Florence High School, Lane enlisted in the United States Army. While serving, he was stationed in Northern England, where he met the love of his life, his English Rose, Barbara Sutcliffe, at a New Year’s Eve party on the military base. After dating for two years, they married in Arlington, VA in 1965. Lane was honorably discharged in 1967. Lane and Barbara moved to Rochester, NY where he attended and graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology. While living in Rochester, they welcomed their two children, Leigh and Matt.
In 1974, Lane and his family moved back home to Mississippi, first living in Pearl and later in Mendenhall, where they lived for thirty-five years and were members of Mendenhall United Methodist Church.
Lane worked for Mosler Banking Company for many years before starting his own company, AVS. He became well known to bankers across the state who knew he could be trusted with only a handshake. In 2011, Lane retired and moved with Barbara to Sumrall, MS to be closer to their grandchildren, Leighton and Sam.
Lane, who was known as “Junior” by his relatives and “Ida” by his grandchildren, was a true family man. He loved, supported, and cared for all his family. He enjoyed golfing with his nephew (more like his brother), Johnny, hosting family reunions, and all things related to his loving wife, children, and dear grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Roland; son, Matthew Roland (Courtney); daughter, Leigh Vestal (Alan); daughter-in-law, Heather Lott Roland; sister, Myrtle Cooksey; grandchildren, Laighton Roland, and Samuel Roland.
He was preceded in death by his parents, P.L. and Mattie Roland; brothers, William Roland, Gene Roland, Billy Roland, Kathrine Stingley, Audrey Cauthen, Mildred McGuire, and Barbara Steves.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall, MS on Sunday, January 8, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The service will be at 10:00 am on Monday, January 9, 2023, at Tutor Funeral Home in Mendenhall. Interment will follow at Brandon Memorial Gardens in Brandon, MS.
