Not everyone seems to find their niche in life, but Kim Holbrook, who passed away Friday evening at age 51 of cancer, didn’t seem to be one of those people. She quickly found her path during her first few years of college by entering into the School of Barbering at Hinds Community College. While starting off considering a career in Math, making people feel beautiful on the inside and out became more important. Over the years, Kim also touched many lives in the pageant industry through coaching, judging, and of course, doing hair and make up.
As Kim worked her chosen profession, time turned her into a wife, then a dedicated mother of two beautiful children. She was already a loving sister of two younger siblings, a dependable and trusting daughter and granddaughter and a caring and enjoyable niece. Kim simply loved life and life seemed to love her in return.
A few short weeks after her 51st birthday, Kim discovered a growth on her leg that looked suspicious. Friday night at 8:49 pm, this amazing woman passed after a hard fought battle with melanoma, one of the world’s toughest and most formable cancers. Kim was born in Jackson at Baptist Hospital March 19, 1965. She graduated from Copiah Academy in Crystal Springs in 1983 where she was a cheerleader, an honor student, member of the track team, the Beta Club, the Bible Club, and Who’s Who Among High School Students. At Hinds Community College, like her mother before her, she was a member of the historical Hinds Hi-Steppers. No U.S. college dancing group has ever received more invitations to national televised bowl games, pro games or national parades than the Hinds Hi-Steppers.
Kim is survived by daughter Hollie Holbrook of Austin, Texas, son Hayden Holbrook of Magee, and mother Kathryn May Wallace of Magee. She is also survived by a brother, Scott Wallace and his wife Pat Wallace and their two children, Emily Wallace and Kaci Wallace and a sister, Leigh Wallace and her daughter, Ellie Cameron of Purvis. She was preceded in death by her father, the late Wayne Wallace of Magee, maternal grandparents, the late Eleanor Caughman and Bill May of Magee, and paternal grandparents, the late Louise and Mallox Wallace of Magee, She was also preceded by nephew Tyler Scott Wallace. She also leaves friend and former husband, Jeff Holbrook of Magee.
