HYDE-SMITH LANDS SECOND SUBCOMMITTEE CHAIRMANSHIP
Miss. Senator Will Chair Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Marketing, and Agriculture Security
WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.) has been named chairman of the Senate Agriculture Subcommittee on Livestock, Marketing, and Agriculture Security, a panel with oversight over livestock and dairy production, marketing, food safety, and security issues.
The appointment means Hyde-Smith will chair two subcommittees in the 116th Congress, including leading the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Legislative Branch.
“I’m pleased to have this opportunity to work with the committee to advance policies that benefit American agriculture, businesses, and consumers,” Hyde-Smith said.
“From day one Senator Hyde-Smith’s service on the Senate Agriculture Committee has been exemplary, especially as a new Senator fighting hard for her farmers and ranchers during the Farm Bill debate. I am pleased she has stepped up to chair the Subcommittee on Livestock, Marketing, and Agriculture Security. Her leadership will ensure livestock producers from Mississippi and around the nation will have a good listener and a strong advocate,” said Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-Kan.).
The subcommittee’s oversight involves the U.S. Department of Agriculture Marketing and Regulatory Program and Food Safety mission areas, which now includes catfish inspection. It also includes the USDA Office of Homeland Security and agricultural security functions in other agencies and offices.
Hyde-Smith has retained her memberships on the Commodities, Risk Management, and Trade Subcommittee and the Conservation, Forestry and Natural Resources Subcommittee.
