COVINGTON COUNTY, MISS. The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is moving forward with several projects on Highway 49 in Covington County.
Construction continues in the southbound lanes of Highway 49 between Mount Olive and Collins as crews work to extend pipes and box culverts in advance of the shoulder widening process. Concrete barriers will be put in place at various locations for extended lane closures to construct retaining walls.
The process of cutting timber from the right of way is complete. Throughout the month, construction crews will continue removing stumps and limbs on Highway 49 from just south of Collins to the Forrest County line.
Intersection improvements continue at Kola Road. Work is underway on the west side of Highway 49 to reconstruct and pave the frontage road. Crews will continue in this area until early 2018.
Motorists traveling this stretch of Highway 49 in Covington County are urged to be on high alert for roadside workers, said Transportation Commissioner Tom King. Please remember to slow down and pay close attention to all traffic control devices as crews work to complete each of these projects as efficiently as possible.
