In an election that raised over $1.1 million in election contributions, Michael Guest and David Baria won the prize. Guest was elected as the Republican nominee for the 3rd Congressional District and David Baria the Democrat Senate nominee.
The election was called around 8:30 PM in favor of Guest. Baria was declared winner around 9:15.
Simpson County voted solidly for Michael Guest. With 23 out of 23 precincts reporting Guest received 1,242 votes and Hughes 537. With the backing of the Governor and law enforcement, Guest soundly defeated Hughes.
David Baria received 255 votes and Howard Sherman received 394. Although Simpson County support Sherman, Baria won the spot in the Senate election.
For the first time since I have been reporting elections, we did not receive vote totals by boxes. We were given combined totals.
Elections cost our county almost $25,000 per election!
July 10, 2018 is the election to fill the seat vacated by Andy Gipson. Five candidates are vying for the position: Cliff Brown, Hayes Patrick, Chris Purdum, Cemper Scott, and Price Wallace.
