This week saw some good news for Mississippi!
A bill to abolish Mississippi’s state income tax passed the House. If this Tax Freedom bill becomes law, workers in our state will get to keep more of what they earn.
Those earning up to $47,700 a year will not pay any income tax – period. Married couples have to earn $95,400 before they pay any income tax. Hunter Estes wrote about the bill in this article here.
Some have expressed concern that this plan to abolish income tax is just an off set. In other words, what we are being given with the income tax cut would be taken away with an increase in the sales tax. In reality there is an element of that, but under this plan the total amount of tax Mississippians pay will fall substantially.
The bill also includes a proposal to cut the tax you pay when you buy groceries. Since lower income households pay a higher portion of their incomes on groceries, cutting tax on groceries disproportionately helps poorer folk.
Watch Speaker Philip Gunn explain his thinking behind the bill here: |
All this reminds me of a guy trying to make you pick which cup the pea’s under. Reducing or eliminating sales tax on food seems a step forward – the rest of this proposal is just rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.
