March 30th was the final day of the first annual C4 Fitness Challenge hosted by Chaucer Funchess. Funchess, a former linebacker with the Oklahoma State Cowboys and strength and conditioning coach at Southern Mississippi, was responsible for the program. Funchess was assisted by Brian Barnard and Christian Carrico.
The challenge began in early January and lasted for 12 weeks. Participants met at the football field on the campus of Simpson County Academy in the wee hours of the morning to improve their fitness levels and for some participants, the chance to jumpstart their New Year’s resolution to lose weight.
Each day, the athletes participated in various drills on the football field, the track, the gym, the weight room and anywhere else, depending on the weather. The athletes mastered drills such as the Wounded Dog, the Inch Worm, Bear Crawls (front and back), burpees and countless others.
Christy Barr was one such participant. Per Barr, “the first two weeks, I had muscles I didn’t even know I had that were sore. But in the third week I found my grove and found myself getting stronger and faster each week.”
The challenge began on the first day in the gym with some basic fitness tests to gauge each athlete’s ability. On the last day, the athletes went through the same fitness tests to see how much they had improved. In most cases, the athletes doubled, and in some cases, tripled the number of push-up, step-ups and sit-ups they could complete.
Every athlete saw improvement in their fitness level and collectively, the group lost over 200 pounds.
Jenny Herrington, another participant, enjoyed the program. “I have participated in other similar boot camps, but I really enjoyed this one. It was easy to be at the school each morning at 5:30 with coaches that were so encouraging, not to mention, easy on the eyes.”
Funchess plans to host a shorter fitness program beginning April 17 and lasting until May 25. The class will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday of each week from 5:30-6:30 each morning at Simpson Academy. The cost for the entire program will be $185.
