The state’s rate of influenza-like illness has declined steadily over the last few weeks, but remains near the high point of last year’s flu season. This means that flu is still a threat in Mississippi, and will be for weeks to come.
Nationwide, flu activity remains high in more than 30 states. Between February 18th and 24th, 17 new pediatric flu deaths in the U.S. were reported, bringing the total to 114 for the season so far. Mississippi has two confirmed pediatric deaths due to flu.
With flu season still strong, all adults and children six month and older need a flu shot this year. Even you do get sick, flu vaccination reduces your chance of severe illness, complications and death. Children can be especially vulnerable to the flu, and children with any underlying medical problems, including neuro-developmental disorders, are at higher risk.
