Ernest was born in Mize, Mississippi but grew up and attended school in Magee, Mississippi. Not long after moving to Magee, he met his beautiful wife to be Judy. They would go on to marry in 1968 and enjoy 54 years of marriage. He was athletic and loved sports, especially football where he served as captain of his team at Magee High School. After high school, he spent seven years in the Mississippi National Guard and then went to work for the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) in the traffic signal division, where he retired after 28 years. During that time, he had two sons and enjoyed nothing more than watching them play sports. He worked in the private sector for several years before fully retiring to spend more time with his family, which had now grown to include grandchildren. After retirement, he and Judy split their time between their home in Destin and their son’s ranch in Texas. Ernest loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, and traveling the country. But what he loved most of all, was simply spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his father, William Lawrence McAlpin; mother, Ximena Williamson McAlpin; brothers, Clyde, Billy, Ellis, and Charles McAlpin; and sister, Deline McAlpin Smith.
Survivors include his loving wife of fifty-four years, Judy Shivers McAlpin of Destin, Florida; two sons, Shawn McAlpin (Melissa) of Fulshear, Texas and Torrey McAlpin (Kristan) of Spring, Texas; five grandchildren, Taylor, Madelyn, Ellie, Katelyn and Tanner McAlpin; and a host of other family members and friends.
Pallbearers will be Pat Smith, John Rudd, Ricky Fortenberry, Bert Mohr, Billy Blair, and Billy Nuell Williamson.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the IPF Foundation in memory of Ernest McAlpin” (https://ipffoundation.org/).
