The Simpson County Election Commissioners for District 2 (Eugene Blair) and 4 Diane McPhail) were certified as candidates during the Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday, February 15, 2023 for the November election.
Road Manger, Ben Warren, presented Randy Horan as a part-time hire as an operator for the Summer. Christopher Stevens was approved as a new hire laborer in the road department. Many roads and ditches have suffered damage from the excessive rain in the past weeks. As soon as weather improves, roads will be repaired along with pot holes that have developed.
The board approved to purchase a dart gun at the price of $230.00 for the Sheriff’s department to aid in animal control.
911 received a total of 716 calls from January 15, 2023 to February 14, 2023. Numbers were down from this time last year when a total of 1235 calls were received. The county fire departments responded to a total of 6 structure calls.
A table top planning for all agencies is being planned. The exercise would include a mock rail derailment near a pipeline.
A total of $15,200 was been received in permit fees for 2023. During 2022 and a total of $53,160 fees were received in permits.
Charlie Welch introduced J J Merchant Auction Company to the board. J J Merchant explained how their online auction worked and how they could help the county to received the most money for their surplus property. Presently the county has 34 vehicle and/or equipment for auction. The bidding process will run 2 to 3 days online before closing. The company charges 10% fee and the county would receive their part 7 days after bidding closes.
Popular Spring Water Association requested any help they could receive from the county to be able to apply for grants. Popular Springs Water Association is a district that falls under the Board of Supervisors which does not allow the water association to receive assistant and grants like rural water associations. There are only a few of this type in the state that operate under this system. The cost is significant to disassemble from the Board of Supervisors. There are some assistance programs through CMPD but the association has to first develop a need and define a project and plan before applying for any assistance.
Charlie Welch advised he had met and directed project manger drop zones and storage facility areas for the roof, windows and door project at the courthouse. The project will begin with the windows first. Welch advised the lights at the health department will be replaced the end of the month and the first of March.
Mark Thames, concerned citizen, met before the board to express his concerns over the condition of Clarence Thames road. Thames advised the road was neglected. Supervisor Mitchell Chatman advised work has been completed on the road with a rock and tar project plus an additional culvert had been added. Ben Warren Road Manager advised a plan was under way and would be addressed due to the culverts not handling the amount of water.
