Easy Win for the Saints

By: Melissa Grace

Prentiss Christian traveled to Vicksburg Friday night to face the Eagles of Porter’s Chapel Academy. The Eagles were celebrating homecoming, but the Saints were a poor choice if they were looking for a win. The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff. Josh Daley kicked off to the 11 yard line and assisted Jesse Hall on the tackle at the Eagles’ 24 yard line. Porter’s Chapel worked out to the 30 yard line, but the Saints defense forced them back to the 25 yard line to punt. The punt attempt was blocked by the Saints and recovered by Michael Goddard for a touchdown. Daley added the PAT giving Prentiss a quick 7-0 lead. Daley’s kickoff went 30 yards and was returned to the 38 yard line. The Eagles lost a yard on the drive and elected to punt back to the Saints. Eric Powell fielded the punt at the 36 yard line and moved it up to the 46 yard line. Blake Greenlee found Michael Goddard on 1st down for a 54 yard touchdown pass. Daley added the PAT again making the score 14-0 with only 3:00 burned off the clock. The Saints kicked off to the Eagle returner who was brought down by Steven Colson and Hall at the 32 yard line. Good defense stopped the drive for a 2 yard loss forcing another Eagle punt. Following a 26 yard punt with no return, the Saints began their next drive on the PCS 30 yard line. Austin Daughdrill took the 1st down handoff 24 yards to the 44 yard line. Goddard took the ball the distance on the very next play, but a holding call brought the ball back to the Eagles 30 yard line. Three plays later, Greenlee hit Daley on a 29 yard pass for a touchdown. Daley added the PAT making the score 21 to 0 with 5:29 still to play in the 1st quarter. The following Daley kickoff sailed 46 yards and was quickly covered by Taylor Barrett and Colson at the 21 yard line. The Eagles gained 7 yards on a 1st down run, but consecutive sacks by Kolbe Verdun, Ned Sanders and Kash Miller forced another Eagle punt. Powell fielded the Eagle punt at the 20 yard line and returned it 13 yards to the 33 yard line. “Jumbo” Jack Chavis stepped into the backfield and mixed in with Daughdrill, Goddard and Barrett. The Saints moved the ball down to the 7 yard line before facing a 4th down. Daley was called upon to attempt the 24 yard field goal, but his kick missed its mark turning the ball over to the Eagles at the 20 yard line. The Eagles made it to the 7 yard line, but could go no farther and elected to punt once again. The 32 yard punt had no return and gave the ball the Saints at the 49 yard line. The very next play, Daughdrill scored on 49 yard rush around left end. Daley added the PAT and giving Prentiss a 28-0 lead with 8:01 to go in the 1st half. Daley’s kickoff went out of bounds giving the Eagles the ball on the 35 yard line. Amidst pressure from the Saints the Eagle quarterback scrambled for a 14 yard gain on 1st down followed by a 6 yard TB run. However, a penalty on 2nd down and a sack by Tanner Berry on 3rd down made the Eagles punt again. The 26 yard punt was taken by Powell and returned 16 yards to the 45 yard line. A holding penalty on the return moved the ball back to the 35 yard line. Good runs by Daughdrill and Goddard with help from Barrett moved the ball all the way to the Eagles 29 yard line. It was there that Greenlee found Daley again for a touchdown pass. The PAT was blocked, but the Saints had a sizeable 34-0 lead with only 39 seconds to play in the half. Daley’s kickoff went out of bounds again putting the back on the 35 yard line. The Saints dropped into a prevent style defense allowing the Eagles to move the ball to the 48 yard line before time expired.

Following a lengthy half time and homecoming festivities, the Eagles kicked off to Goddard who returned the ball 16 yards to the 45 yard line of Porter’s Chapel. This drive went to Powell on consecutive plays. Marching down the field he found the end zone on a screen pass from Greenlee that went 18 yards for a touchdown. An errant snap on the PAT forced a 2pt conversion attempt that failed keeping the score at 40-0 with 7:17 to play in the 3rd quarter. Daley’s kickoff was taken at the 22 yard line and returned to the 32 yard line of the Eagles. Porter’s Chapel put together the only impressive drive of the day making their way down to the Saint 25 yard line. A 13 yard loss on 2nd down and back to back incompletions gave the ball back to Prentiss at the 38 yard line of the Saints. The freshman and sophomore offensive players stepped in and got the ball to the 46 yard line with runs by Wade Watkins and Daniel Magee. John Ryan Lee was sacked on 3rd and short forcing a PCS punt. Greenlee’s punt was quickly covered at the 22 yard line after flying 37 yards. Another sack by Chavis and Sanders on 1st down led to an interception by Goddard on 2nd and long. Lee, Watkins and Magee worked down to the Eagle 23 yard line, but the Saints could not convert the 4th and 4 attempt giving the ball back to Porter’s Chapel. With a commanding lead comes a running clock and a quick 2nd half. The Eagles only had 1:56 left in the game to try and find the scoreboard. Jade Lee and Jesse Hall teamed up to cover the Eagle receivers on the left with help from Dathan Dungan on the right. The game would end on consecutive incompletions putting the Saints at 7-0 on the season. PCS will travel to Hartfield Academy, kickoff is at 7:00 pm.
