Durward Lauch Hopkins, 87, of Collins, MS passed away Monday, November 13, 2017 at VA Nursing Home in Collins, MS. He was born Friday, July 11, 1930 in Mize, MS.
Durward Hopkins, a generous gentleman, scholar, writer and poet aka “Bard of Cohay Creek” died Monday, November 13, 2017, at the age of 87. He was born in Mize, Mississippi on July 11, 1930. He graduated in 1949 from Central High School in Jackson and was an active and proud “49er”. Durward served in the Korean War, traveled the world and returned to Mize for his retirement. He was a regular contributor to the Smith County Reformer, Jackson Daily News and Clarion Ledger newspapers.
He was preceded in death by his son, Patrick Howell; his parents, Chester Fletcher and Pearl Butler Hopkins, all his brothers and sisters, Harold Chester Hopkins, Mary Hopkins Barnett, Kathleen Hopkins Beard Skenandore, Eileen Dale Hopkins Schexnayder, Janette Hopkins Linsteadt Smith, Dolly Hopkins and James Ormand Hopkins, his fraternal great-grandparents, Samuel Lafayette and Elizabeth Sheffield Parker Hopkins, William Wages II and Keziah Duckworth Speed, Cicero Lafayette Sr. and Charity Pamelia Speed Little Hopkins; maternal great-grandparents, Alfred L. and Susie Emmaline Gambrell Jones, Henry Lawson and Zilpha Lee Bishop Butler, John and Sarah Adeline Byrd Williams, John Bartholomew and Eliza Catherine Williams Butler and his grandparents, James McDonel and Ella Jones Hopkins, John Henry and Elizabeth “Molly” Jones Butler.
Durward is survived by his sons, John Harold Hopkins of Alabama, Eric Fitzgibbon Hopkins and wife, Kendra, of Texas, Michael Howell and wife, Edna, of Texas; daughter, Lynn Prewitt and husband, Chuck, of Mize; grandchildren, Luke, Collin, Christopher, Taylor, Patrick and Hunter Hopkins, Leigh and Ancil Harkrider, all of Texas, Matthew Hickey of Austin, Zachary Howell and spouse, Garrett Hall, of New York, Joshua Howell of Austin and Morgan Howell of Slidell and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements will be made at a later date with Colonial Chapel Funeral Home of Magee in charge.
