Diseases transmitted by insect bites, especially ticks and mosquitoes, have more than tripled in the United States over the past decade, according to a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Cases of insect-borne illnesses rose from around 27,000 nationwide in 2004 to more than 96,000 in 2016. Diseases new to the U.S., including seven carried by ticks, are partly responsible for the increase.
The most serious tick-borne disease in Mississippi is Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF). RMSF can be severe or even fatal if not treated in the first few days of symptoms.
