Dennis Ray “Dick” Lack

Dennis Ray “Dick” Lack, 91, of Mize, Mississippi died peacefully in his sleep in Magee General Hospital on July 24, 2016. Dick was born and raised in Mize, the son of Wilborn Moses Lack and Estelle McCallum Lack and brother to seven siblings. In July 1948, he married Iva Dell Stubbs of Magee, his beloved wife of 68 years.
After growing up on the farm, Dick enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine upon the outbreak of World War II. He sailed around the world as he served in both theaters of war, rising to the rank of Third Mate after attending officer training school in New Orleans. He was honorably discharged on May 17, 1945.
Dick spent his professional life in Houston, Texas at Sline Industrial Painters, Inc. There, he worked his way up from being a painter’s assistant to President and Chief of Operations. Upon his retirement, Dick and Dell returned to the farm in Mize where he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and raising cattle. He was a committed supporter of the Calvary Presbyterian Church and Cemetery Association.
Dick was preceded in death by his brothers Col. Wendell D. Lack, Charles R. Lack, WM Lack Jr., Mack C. Lack, and sister Willene Lack. He is survived by his wife Dell, daughter Karen Devereux and her two children Burke and Colby, daughter Jan Harrelson, her husband Chris and their children Elizabeth and Gray with wife Daniele, brother James Hugh Lack and wife Jo, sister Jean Ann Griffing and husband Clayton, sister-in-law Barbara Lack, close personal friend Dr. Charles Pruitt III and wife Linda, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Above all, Dick will be remembered for his generosity, humor, compassion, and sharp wit.
Services were held at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Mize on Tuesday, July 26. The family would like to express appreciation for the extraordinary care provided by the Cardiac Critical Care Unit at St. Dominic’s Hospital and also the staff of Magee General Hospital in his last hours. Particular thanks to his personal care givers Cherie, Cindy, and Dawn, as well as Stephen and Zach for their continued dedication to him, his farm, and family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent in Dick’s name to Magee Health Trust Foundation for the Magee General Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Tutor Funeral Home of Magee.
