The May 6, 2024 Simpson County Board of Supervisors Meeting was called to order followed by prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. All Board members were in attendance.

The April 2024 minutes were approved.  The Board passed:  Paying the Chancery Clerk for servicing the 2024 Homestead applications; petition to establish Holloway family Cemetery; and 16th section public school residential leases for Wade Holyfield, 289 Holyfield  Road, Mendenhall, MS and Hertie Griffith, 100 Lucille’s Road, Magee, MS.

Mrs. Rosie Wilson appeared before the board concerning a solid waste bill she received.  No one has lived at the address since 2018.  Tax Assessor Jamie Brewer agreed to assist Mrs. Wilson.

Road Manager Ben Warren discussed the situation of dead trees failing on County Roads. Warren suggested the county cut the dead trees and push the tree back to the property line allowing the tree just to rot. The question of trees on private property and the legality of removing the trees led to a stall in deciding.  Supervisor Charlie Westmoland stated, “ We ain’t seen nothing yet.”  The dead trees are a problem all over the state of Mississippi.  Warren felt the county needed to get ahead of the situation to avoid road closures in the future as well as the cost factor.  “If we sit around and do nothing for a year, we are going to have huge problems,” explained Warren.  According to County Attorney Danny Welch, the law is not clear on the removal of dead trees.  The Board decided to advertise in the paper and online for two weeks the intentions of the board.  Warren emphasized the continued problems with back hoes (really all equipment).  Lease/purchase agreements will be researched and reported to the board at the next meeting.

Sheriff Report:

Eric Bowen County Administrator

Willie Harris a[[eared before the board concerning an easement on Sullivan Road.  The Department of Interior is requesting the easement due to a problem dating back many many years involving a Choctaw Indian land issue.

The meeting was adjourned for an executive session
