First order of business during the Simpson County Board of Supervisors meeting was bid opening for intention to purchase supplies, material, etc. Proof of publication was supplied. The bids were tabled and taken under advisement for approval.
Richard Rankin and Gaye Magee met before the board representing the Simpson County Historical Society. The committee presented a plan of action leading up to the Simpson County Bicentennial celebration. January 23, 2024 Simpson County will celebrate their 200th birthday. A celebration leading up to the date is being planned. An executive committee will be formed to handle fund raising, marketing, etc. The committee will come back before the board with any request and support needed.
Melinda Green came before the board asking permission to proceed forward with seeking a grant to help the elderly within the county. The funding is from the affordable housing and SNAP programs. The supervisors tabled the request asking for more information regarding the program and how the money would be spent.
Road Manager Ben Warren updated the board that crews were getting supplies ready for summer projects. Warren advised weather was still an issue with delaying ongoing projects.
Sheriff Paul Mullins requested the Mississippi Sheriff’s Association 2023 membership dues in the amount to $1,000 be paid. Permission was granted for Olivia Gilmore and Skyla Morrow from dispatch to attend an Active Shooter and Workplace Violence class in Mendenhall February 6-7, 2023 at a cost of $300.00. The board approved Mary Weatherby as a new hire for jail part-time certified.
John Kilpatrick with Emergency Management reported a total of 1160 911 calls for December 15, 2022 to January 14, 2023. A total of $4800 was collected in fees from permits for December. A total of 16 structure fires were reported for the month.
The board granted permission for John Killpatrick to attend a MEMEA training in Pearl, MS December 28, 2023.
An in depth conservation came with Mississippi Hub and the sub companies underneath them. Trail Stone Industry is claiming their was no gas in the facility December 30, 2022 and resulting in no taxes owed for 2022. An invoice of $33,288 was submitted. The board voted to deny the request of no gas. There are approximately 8 companies under the Hub and as of date Trail Stone is the only one disputing tax.
The board approved to hire Michael Andrews as the new animal control officer and solid waste enforcement officer for Simpson County.
The board approved amending the social media and computer usage policy to adopt the Governor’s ban on of Tik Tok on Simpson County Computers, phones, tablets, and other devices.
Charlie Welch updated the board on ongoing construction projects. The Solid waste project is 100% complete and came in almost $5,000 under budget. The Pole Barn project is at 86% complete. A new roof is being installed at the Health Department. Lights are being installed at the health department. The board approved to see if the road equipment can safely remove trees surround the health department building to avoid straw collecting on the building.
A concern of trash boarding property on Waters Road was discussed. Picture of a large pile of trash was provided. A letter for clean up will be sent to the property owner. County personnel will follow up after letter to make sure property has been addressed.
